There’s a word nestled in the heart of Scripture that wraps around every shattered story like a promise — Go’el.

It means redeemer, but not in a distant, passive way. A Go’el doesn’t just observe your pain. He steps in. He pays the price. He defends your name and reclaims what was stolen. Whether the need is land, justice, or freedom — the Go’el shows up.

We see this in Boaz, who covered Ruth not just with provision, but with honour and belonging.

We see it in God, who heard the cries of His people and came down to deliver them from slavery and most tenderly, we see it in Jesus — our forever Go’el. The One who says, “You are not forgotten. I will bring you back.”

Not because you earned it. Not because you weren’t broken. But because He is good.

He didn’t just redeem our sin. He redeemed our story.

💡Empathy vs. Compassion: The Go’el Distinction

There’s a difference between feeling someone’s pain and stepping into it.

• Empathy feels.

• Compassion moves.

• Empathy might say, “I see you’re hurting.”

• Compassion says, “I can’t bear for you to hurt alone — I will walk with you.”

Jesus didn’t stop at empathy.

He was moved with compassion — and then He acted.

The Go’el doesn’t just weep for your loss — he pays the price to restore it.

To live like Christ is to become that kind of redeemer for others — not their saviour, but their companion and advocate.
