The Sacred Pause of the Threshold

Finding Faith in the In-Between

📖"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’"

Isaiah 30:21

There’s a sacred space between the breaking and the building, between resting and rising again. It’s the threshold.

And it rarely feels like glory.

More often, it feels like stillness tinged with fear… a quiet room without answers. You’re no longer where you were, but you’ve not quite stepped into what’s next. It’s that disorienting in-between where old identities slip off your shoulders and new ones haven’t fully formed.

It’s also where God whispers.

Thresholds are tender places. They ask for open hands, surrendered plans, and a kind of courage that doesn’t wait for confirmation. In these places, God gently pries our fingers off the need to know and invites us instead into trust. Into listening.

I’ve come to see these moments not as delays or detours but as altars where we’re stretched, softened, and strengthened in ways we can’t yet name. It’s often not until we’ve crossed the threshold that we see what was happening in the waiting: how God was tilling the soil of our hearts, preparing us to hold the new.

Like Abraham, we’re sometimes called to walk even when we don’t know the destination. And like the voice in Isaiah, the Holy Spirit often guides us not with a map but with a murmur: “This is the way…”

The threshold invites a holy kind of faith. A “yes” before the how. A step before the sight. A pause that becomes holy ground.

So, whether you are stepping into something new, letting go of something dear, or simply standing still in a waiting season, you are not alone on the threshold.

He is already there, holding the door.

Creative Prompt:

Draw or paint a doorway that symbolises your current threshold — it might be cracked open, completely closed, or wide with light streaming through. Add symbols or words that represent what you’re letting go of and what you’re stepping toward. Don’t worry about the final picture — let it be a prayer in colour and form.

Closing Prayer:

Father, thank You for meeting me in the in-between — for being present not only in the beginning or the breakthrough but in the pause, the waiting, the wondering. Teach me to trust You even when I cannot see the path. Help me to hear Your voice and respond with a faithful yes, like Abraham. May this threshold become a place of deep transformation. I surrender the outcome to You and choose to walk forward with open hands. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
