When Calm Holds the Line

Steadfastness in the Face of Rising Tempers

📖 "If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, Do not leave your post; For conciliation pacifies great offenses."

Ecclesiastes 10:4

The Hebrew word for “spirit” here is רוּחַ (ruach)—breath, wind, disposition. It speaks of a mood or emotional gust that can swell suddenly, like a storm rolling in over calm seas. “Rises” implies an upsurge of force, the kind that can catch you off guard.

And yet, God’s wisdom whispers: “Do not leave your post.” The word מָקוֹם (maqom) means far more than a physical location—it’s your God-appointed place, your role, your calling. To step away from that in haste or hurt is to abandon the very ground He’s given you to steward.

Conciliation—from the Hebrew מַרְפֵּא (marpe’)—means healing, soothing, a gentle remedy. It is not weakness; it’s the courage to remain anchored in peace when provocation invites you to react. Sometimes the most powerful move is not moving at all—staying steady, heart tethered to the Holy Spirit, until the storm subsides.

Jesus modelled this before Pilate, calm and resolute in His mission, unmoved by accusation or anger. To stand in peace when another stands in fury is to reveal the Kingdom’s unshakable foundation beneath your feet.
