📖 "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake."
Matthew 24:9
These words of Jesus are not whispered for comfort. They are spoken with clarity and love, preparing His followers for a road that would be narrow, costly, and deeply consecrated. Christ does not promise popularity; He promises presence. He does not minimise suffering; He names it, so fear will not have the final word.
In Matthew 24, Jesus is teaching His disciples about what lies ahead. He speaks plainly, not to alarm them, but to anchor them. Tribulation here is not random hardship. The Greek word thlipsis carries the sense of pressure, squeezing, being pressed from all sides. It is the weight that comes when faith collides with a world that resists truth.
Hatred “for My name’s sake” is not about personal offence or poor witness. It is about allegiance. When a life bears the name of Christ, it exposes darkness simply by carrying light. That light unsettles systems built on power, pride, and self-rule.
Yet notice what Jesus does not say. He does not say you are abandoned. He does not say you are defeated. He speaks as One who walks ahead of us, already acquainted with betrayal, violence, and rejection. His words carry the quiet strength of the Cross, where hatred met holiness, and death was overcome by love.
For the newly born-again believer, this passage is not a call to fear, but to faithfulness. It reminds us that following Jesus may cost comfort, reputation, even safety. Still, it also assures us that suffering for His name is never wasted. Heaven sees. God keeps count. The Holy Spirit sustains those who remain faithful when the cost is high.
