Unshaken Obedience

When obeying God puts a target on your back

📖 "Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams."

1 Samuel 15:22

There’s a peculiar ache that can come with obedience — not just the cost of surrender, but the backlash it stirs. Have you ever noticed how walking in obedience to God sometimes seems to provoke unexpected resistance? Not just in the spiritual realm, but through people — those you thought were allies, mentors, even friends.

Obedience stirs up the enemy. Not because you’ve done something wrong, but because you’re advancing in the right direction. The enemy takes notice of hearts on fire and tries to extinguish them. He looks for fractured souls already bleeding from offence, insecurity, or bitterness… and whispers his lies. They, in their pain, may begin to oppose you — not even realising they’ve become part of the resistance.

It’s deeply painful when this happens. The temptation is to retreat, to question the path, to shrink back into silence.

Don’t.

Even when your obedience leads you into fire — stay the course.

📖 "Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams." — 1 Samuel 15:22 (NKJV)

God is not impressed by outward acts that cost us nothing. What He longs for is hearts yielded, surrendered, and aligned with His will — even when it’s uncomfortable. Even when it costs us our reputation, our comfort, or our sense of safety.

📖 “No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn.” — Isaiah 54:17 (NKJV)

He never promised that weapons wouldn't form, only that they wouldn’t succeed. Your job is not to control who rises up against you — it’s to remain unshaken, even when it hurts.

Keep praying. Keep obeying. Keep trusting. The One who called you is faithful.

Reflection:

  • Has obedience to God ever led to unexpected opposition? How did it affect your heart? 🤔

  • Are there wounded areas in you that the enemy could try to exploit, just as he does in others? 🤔

  • In what ways have you prioritised sacrifice over simple obedience — and what is God inviting you to realign? 🤔

  • What helps you stay steady when relationships shift as a result of following God's call? 🤔

Affirmation:

Beloved, your obedience is your offering. May it rise as incense, fragrant and pleasing to the One who sees in secret and rewards openly. Obey — even when it hurts — and trust that He is making all things beautiful in His time. 🌿🕊

Creative Prompt:

Create a piece of art or a written reflection titled “Still I Rise.” Let it be an honest response to the cost of obedience — the ache, the betrayal, the weariness — but end with a declaration of hope and unwavering faith.

Closing Prayer:

Father, obedience is not always easy. Sometimes it leads me into rejection, betrayal, and pain I did not expect. Yet I choose to follow You. I choose faithfulness over comfort, truth over popularity, and love over fear. Strengthen me when I grow weary. Steady my heart when I feel misunderstood. Help me pray through the pain and walk forward with courage. I know You are my Defender. I trust You to redeem every battle and heal every wound. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
