📖 "Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter."
Ecclesiastes 10:20

In Hebrew, the phrase "do not curse" here comes from the root qalal (קָלַל), meaning to make light of, despise, or treat with contempt. It’s not simply about avoiding rude words — it’s about the posture of our hearts toward authority and others. Solomon is pointing to the sobering truth that our thoughts and attitudes, even when hidden, carry weight in the spiritual realm.
The “bird of the air” is a poetic image — perhaps a metaphor for how nothing remains hidden before God, or how words and attitudes have a way of travelling further than we expect. Whispers can become rumours; silent bitterness can seep into our tone and actions without us realising.
Jesus reminds us that "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). What is cultivated in secret will eventually find its way into the open. This isn’t to inspire fear, but to call us into a deeper integrity — the kind where our private thoughts are as surrendered to the Holy Spirit as our public words.
When we let Holy Spirit filter our inner dialogue, our hearts become sanctuaries of peace rather than breeding grounds for contempt. It’s not about pretending we don’t struggle with frustration or disappointment, but about laying them at the feet of the King who can change both hearts and circumstances.

Reflection:
What hidden thoughts or quiet resentments have been taking root in my heart lately? 🤔
How might I invite Holy Spirit to transform my private thoughts so they align with God’s love and truth? 🤔
Have I underestimated the influence my “unspoken” attitudes have on my relationships and actions? 🤔

Life Application:

Affirmation:
Creative Prompt:
Create an artwork or journal page that represents your “inner garden.” Identify the weeds (resentments, judgements, or fears) and the flowers (praise, gratitude, compassion). Ask God to show you what needs uprooting and what needs nurturing.

Closing Prayer:
Lord, You see both my words and my thoughts. You know the whispers of my heart before they ever form on my lips. Search me and reveal anything in me that dishonours You or others. Teach me to think in ways that reflect Your kingdom, even in the privacy of my mind. Let my inner life be fragrant with grace, mercy, and truth. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
