Laying Down what was Never You

The sacred unravelling of false identities and the quiet return to who God designed you to be

📖 “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Luke 9:23

There’s a kind of death that brings life.

Not the kind that silences or strips you of your God-given essence — but the kind that gently undoes every lie you believed you had to wear in order to be loved, accepted, or safe. Dying to self isn’t a burial of your true identity. It’s a holy shedding of the layers that were never yours to carry.

The loud one who learnt to perform.

The quiet one who learnt to disappear.

The capable one who never needed help.

The strong one who hid the ache.

The compliant one who silenced her dreams.

These were never you.

They were survival roles. Protective shells. Versions of self shaped by wounds, whispers, and worldly pressures. But none of them hold a candle to the radiant, redeemed identity God wrote over your life from the very beginning.

📖 “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” — Luke 9:23 (NKJV)

To deny yourself in this context isn’t self-erasure; it’s self-restoration. It is to surrender every false self you’ve worn and allow the Spirit of God to restore the “you” He lovingly crafted in your mother’s womb — the one made in His image, full of glory and purpose.

📖 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” — John 8:32 (NKJV)

As we die to what is false, we awaken to what is true. As we let go of what the world demanded, we rise into what the Father destined. This is not loss. It is resurrection.

Creative Prompt:

Take a moment to journal or illustrate “the version of me that was never God’s design.” You might write a letter to that false self, thanking her for the ways she tried to protect you… and gently releasing her to Jesus. Then, create or describe a visual of your true self rising — radiant in her redeemed identity.

Closing Prayer:

Jesus,

Thank You for never confusing my true identity with the masks I’ve worn. Help me surrender the versions of myself that were never part of Your design. Unravel what was shaped by fear, rejection, or survival. Remind me that dying to self is not losing who I am, but becoming who I was always meant to be in You. Let Your truth anchor me. Let Your love restore me. And let my life reflect the radiant beauty of one fully found in You.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
