Wisdom: The Principal Thing

Overview

The book of Proverbs, largely written by King Solomon, was crafted to instruct God’s people in wise living. Wisdom stands at the doorway of every choice, quietly asking to be welcomed first. Wisdom in Scripture is not intelligence, education, or common sense. Biblical wisdom begins with reverence for God and shapes how we think, speak, choose, and walk.

Scripture calls it principal, meaning chief, foundational, the starting place rather than the finishing touch. Life urges us to gather many things, yet the Word gently reorders our priorities, inviting us to seek wisdom before success, before certainty, before speed.

In Hebrew, the word for wisdom, ḥokmâ, carries the meaning of skilled living, the ability to apply God’s truth with humility and reverence for God in everyday life. Wisdom is not passive knowledge. It is truth lived out with humility and obedience.

Wisdom is not cleverness or accumulation. It is alignment. When wisdom leads, understanding follows, and the heart learns how to walk steadily even when the path feels uncertain.

📖 "Wisdom is the principal thing…"

Wisdom is called principal, meaning first, chief, and supreme. God establishes it as foundational, not optional. Before success, before productivity, before achievement, wisdom must come first.

📖 "Therefore get wisdom."

This is a command, not a suggestion. Wisdom must be sought intentionally, pursued deliberately, and valued sacrificially. It is not stumbled upon casually.

📖 "And in all your getting, get understanding."

Understanding is wisdom’s companion. Knowledge gathers information, but understanding discerns meaning and direction. God invites us not just to know, but to comprehend His ways.

Wisdom reorders our priorities. It gently asks us what we are chasing, protecting, or striving for, and whether those pursuits align with what God calls first. When wisdom becomes central, everything else finds its rightful place. Choosing wisdom first reshapes everything else we pursue. When God’s ways guide us, our decisions carry peace rather than regret.
