Everyone is Born an Artist

I genuinely believe this: each one of us came into the world already carrying the spark of an artist within. You see it clearly in toddlers — their first instinct with a pencil, pen, or crayon isn’t to write letters or numbers, but to scribble. Before they can speak in full sentences, they’re already expressing themselves through colour, line, and form. That’s not by accident. That’s design. God created us in His image — the Creator (Genesis 1:27) — which means creativity flows in our spiritual DNA.

That’s why I struggle with the idea that only the “talented” can make art. To me, the term “talented artist” is often misunderstood. What we’re really seeing isn’t some exclusive gift given to a chosen few, but rather the natural result of someone who has nurtured and stayed connected to the creative essence that we all carry. They’ve simply made room for it. They’ve shown up, over and over again, allowing their creativity to grow, mature, and find expression.

Art is no different from language, music, or any skill — it matures with time and intention. If we stop drawing as children, we freeze our creative growth at that stage. And then we wonder, decades later, why we “can’t draw.” But it’s not that we can’t — it’s just that we haven’t. Like any part of ourselves, creativity withers when neglected and blossoms when nurtured.

That’s why I encourage everyone — especially those who’ve said, “I’m not creative” — to revisit that place within them that once loved to scribble. Creativity is not about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s about expression. And above all, it’s about connection — first to ourselves, then to others, and always to the One who formed us.

Let your art be imperfect. Let it be awkward. Let it be childlike. But above all, let it BE. That small act of courage might just open the door to healing you didn’t know you needed.

Creative Prompt: Scribble with Purpose

Find a blank page — ideally one that feels clean and non-judgmental (a piece of scrap paper works beautifully). Take a pencil, a crayon, a pen — whatever is closest — and just scribble.

Let your hand move without thinking. Don’t try to “make” anything. Simply give your inner child permission to play. Afterwards, take a moment to look at your scribble.

  • Do any shapes stand out? 🤔

  • What emotions rise up as you observe it? 🤔

  • Ask the Lord, “What do You see in this, Father?”🤔

Then journal what comes up. You may be surprised at what He reveals in the chaos of your lines.

Here's a Quote Card Suggestion for you to create:

Text:

“You were born with the spark of the Artist in you. Let it speak — not to impress, but to express. Not to perfect, but to connect.” — Trixi

Background: A soft watercolour wash — light blues and peaches — with the faint outline of a child’s scribble subtly layered beneath the text.
