When Fear Writes the Script

The unseen inheritance of spiritual compromise

ree

When my husband and I chose our wedding date — 31 October 1992 — we were very intentional. We wanted a day unshared by birthdays or other special events, a date that would belong solely to us. Back then, Halloween hadn’t yet reached South African shores, so the idea of our anniversary clashing with it never crossed our minds.

Three decades later, it still grieves me that this day, sacred to us as a celebration of covenant love, is increasingly overshadowed by a culture that glorifies darkness. What was once a day of joy and unity now carries the strange tension of being surrounded by imagery that mocks death, fear, and evil — things Christ died to conquer.

There are doors we were never meant to open — thresholds that seem to promise light but conceal only deeper darkness. I have spent decades warning others about the dangers of Halloween, fortune tellers, mediums, and every form of occult involvement. These things may appear harmless or entertaining, but in truth, they are spiritual agreements — invitations to forces that oppose God’s light.

📖 “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.” — 1 Corinthians 10:21 (NKJV)

When you meddle with the demonic, its effects do not stop with you. The doorway you open can echo through generations — touching your children and your children’s children. I know this not merely from Scripture but from lived experience.

My mother, unknowingly searching for comfort and direction, turned to fortune tellers and mediums. I remember her taking us along once when I was about ten. She was seeking light in places where only shadows dwell. Yet in doing so, she exposed our family line to a darkness I could not comprehend as a child.

One fortune teller told her that my father would die, and that I would one day become a teacher. In my little-girl heart, fear took root. I decided that I would never become a teacher — just to prove her wrong — because I didn’t want my dad to die. I didn’t realise it then, but that moment became a binding agreement with a lie.

Without knowing it, I came into alignment with the enemy’s deception, believing that rejecting my God-given calling could somehow protect the one I loved. For decades afterwards, I resisted the teaching anointing that God had placed upon my life — an anointing that has only recently been unveiled and redeemed. What the enemy tried to twist through fear, God has reclaimed through grace.

For years, I also suffered nightmares — nights filled with terror so thick it felt like the air itself turned against me. I would wake paralysed, unable to move or cry out. A heavy presence would press against my chest until, through trembling lips, I could whisper only one word: “Jesus.”The moment His name was spoken, the darkness fled.

Those encounters taught me that the spiritual realm is not a game. Curiosity can become captivity when it drifts from truth. Yet through that darkness, I discovered the incomparable power of the name of Jesus — the Name before which every demon trembles, every curse breaks, and every chain falls away.

📖 “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 (NKJV)

Spiritual compromise always carries consequences. When we seek truth outside of Christ — even in what seems innocent or cultural — we trade holy ground for haunted ground. The unseen cost of such compromise is often borne by those who follow us, because we have given the enemy a legal foothold through our involvement.

I'm truly grateful there is the grace of God: what the enemy meant for harm, the Lord transforms into testimony. His light not only delivered me but began to redeem the bloodline that once invited bondage. Through surrender, repentance, and prayer, Christ restores what sin and deception sought to destroy.

He is the Redeemer of families — the One who severs generational ties to darkness and replaces them with a covenant of grace. Every curse bows to His authority. Every wound finds healing in His light. What once ran through your lineage as pain can now flow as a blessing when you choose the narrow path of obedience.

For me, 31 October will always be about covenant — not fear. It marks the day two lives became one under God’s covering, not a night of costumes and counterfeit light. Even now, I continue to pray that this date will serve as a reminder: that love, truth, and divine union always outshine the shadows.

💡 Reflection:

  • Are there areas in your life or family where curiosity opened doors to deception? 🤔

  • Have you invited Jesus to close those doors and redeem your generational line? 🤔

  • What might true surrender look like for you today — not out of fear, but faith? 🤔

🕊️ A Loving Caution:

If you have ever participated in Halloween — in any form — I lovingly urge you to repent and seek the Lord’s forgiveness and deliverance from the powers of darkness that have gained legal foothold through sin. We cannot fellowship with darkness and expect light to flourish. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where curiosity or tradition may have opened doors that need to be closed and strongholds that need to be dismantled in Jesus’ Name.

Please, rethink any future involvement with celebrating death in this way. Jesus came to bring life and life abundantly — not fear, not bondage, and not the glorification of death. His light is far more beautiful than any imitation the world offers.

🎺 Affirmation:

I walk in the light of Christ. The blood of Jesus covers my family, cancels every curse, and breaks every agreement made with darkness. My inheritance is freedom, and my legacy is light.

🙌 Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your mercy that reaches through generations. Forgive me for any way I or my family have sought guidance or comfort apart from You. I renounce every false light and every doorway that led away from Your truth. Redeem my bloodline, Lord. Let Your cleansing fire purify every root of deception and restore the covenant of grace over my family. I choose You — the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
